A house of Origami cranes

The Birds gently fluttered into the the summer house, on an updraft of air, white, with glimpses of green and pink winking through the glass.

On July 27th we put large, (28x23cm, so they would be seen) white origami paper cranes in the house.
They seem to fly and swoop all around us!
The look soft and yet slightly surprising, paper cranes flying?

The idea of paper and glass,

working harmoniously together, is an intriguing concept. Both materials can be ambiguous; glass, fragile, breaks yet very strong, used to build with and paper, soft easily torn, yet a paper cuts hurts, and pa-pier mac-he used for armour, both here worked delicately together.

The themes associated with origami cranes, peace, good wishes and well being seemed appropriate to the woman's hospital courtyard, it just had to be done.

Li Lu live in the House with 'In Love with Bach' cello music

The Yard was 'alive with the sound of music.....'

Imagine a contemporary 3-D Kandinsky painting,  that was the Summer House!

With great thanks to Li Lu, for Bach's The solo cello suites, and Garth Williams for his photography.

Getting ready........hmm where to play, stand, sit

 Expelliarmus
This energetic pop-up exhibition a 'happening' is the beginning of an exciting consultation with LiLu, cellist and us at Sagar and Campbell realising initial concepts for her new project, with Garth, film maker and Photographer, documenting the projects journey.

Classical Cello music, twirling yellow golden movement, flying notes and hair whisked around, almost in synergy with the Glass houses other worldly floating creatures in pink and green.

Li Lu gave a dynamic performance inside the Glass house, with the deep almost bassy sound of the cello reverberating through the glass, into the yard then drifting into the hospital waiting areas, it seemed to go into the very soul of one.

Another ethereal and dreamy transformation.

Fabulous fun, uplifting, creative, good company, ideas whizzing around and all the while being filmed on and off, and trying to 'behave naturally'.
Who would want to do that!

Consultation of Project Idea
Bringing the Bach Solo cello suites into the public realm, with new audiences, unusual venues, we are suporting a concept for a  visually strangely stunning, designed for purpose.......curiosity (well that would be letting the cat out of the bag) which, will pull the audience into the musically happening......

It was very hard to choose just a few images, as you can see, today I have not limited myself, like a kid in a sweetie shop......

Thank you for viewing our blog, this day was like soul food, it kept a creative light going.
Image below is one of ours, taken of Garth and Lauren snapping away.

Small spheres are in, large balloons out, this seasons colours, random

On Wednesday the 25th May 2011 we went back to the Yard, time to deflate the balloons.....we let them escape; chaotically they floated around, then almost immediately they started to pop. Hurriedly we rounded them up like bouncing sheep, back into the house. Clearly we had to deflate or pop them in the summer house, which offered a little sound proofing!

Yard flowers and plants watered and balloons down.....tiny disc like spheres balanced in random lines on the white table, standing to the attention, of what....?

Alot of hot air - Balloons in the house

Arrived at 10am to pump up our large 3ft white spherical balloons, and it soon became clear, that it wasn't how many balloons two artists could fit into the glass house, but how long our arms would hold out pumping them up! We lasted until 1.15pm, when we had to rush off to next job, red in the face, leaving behind a ethereal surreal scene of beautiful happy balloons floating around celebrating....what?? (references to a 1960's cult tv show not intended, our balloons are lovely, although like the series questions of 'why' and 'what is it all about' do seem to come up).

The summer house being in the middle of a hospital courtyard, is surrounded by offices and waiting areas, on three floors, full of nurses, Dr's, staff and public, looking out onto it. I'm not sure we were an expected site, but hope we gave rise to the odd laugh, entertained waiting patients and created a stir or topic of conversation.
Which might have gone along the Marmite lines.....love it ....or.....not...... but then the next fascination is around the corner. We loved it, a cool (well slightly humid) place to be for a morning.

We would like to thank the kind staff for tea and sellotape.

a summer of art in a summer glass house

Starting from now this glass house at the MRI in Manchester is becoming the home to magical....bizarre...funny....enlightening....fabulous installations. They may stay for 2 hours, 2 days, 2 months.
Look out next week to find out how many spherical white balloons 2 artists can fit into a glass summer house.

The Summer House

This is an artwork we did for the St Mary's maternity hospital in Manchester.
We imagined that when the builders came to excavate the site, they discovered a neglected Victorian summer house. Rather than disappear, it had become home to a rich and magical collection of nature and otherworldliness. In this story we thought that the builders might be inspired to leave the structure there and build around it; a representation of the beauty and continuity of life through change and adversity.

Dedication
Pregnancy and birth are huge times of change and creativity and we dedicate this courtyard to all mothers and specifically to ours.
